6″ Sea Lions

6″ Sea Lion

Swam with a lot of small, Galapagos sea lions and found out they are distant evolutionary relatives to dogs. Dogs are not allowed in their areas because the sea lions can catch Parvo and distemper from them. The Alaska sea lions are large. You can see them swimming at the Seward Sea Life Center.

The tile is made from the Bootlegger Cove clay gathered from the mudflats near Anchorage.

The oak frames are custom made for tiles by a family run woodworking business in Ohio.

Tiles are usually fired three times. The first is a bisque firing to cone 04, or about 1850 degrees Fahrenheit, and the other two firings are to cone 6, or about 2150 degrees Fahrenheit. The tile can be used in just about any setting, wet or dry, indoor or outdoor, even as a hot plate. Though most customers just hang the tile on the wall as art.

The “Silver Hand Artist” stamp on the backside means I’m registered with the state of Alaska as a native Alaskan artist.

All tiles are made to order, it is listed as “in-stock” so you can order and pay. Being a one-person business, it will take 2-3 weeks to make the item if it is not currently available. I can email an image of the tile once it is made for your approval before shipping.
