6″ Halibutman

Description

Many Alaskan stories and myths involved creatures that are a combination of different animals. A shaman was believed to be able to change into his animal spirit form. The individual in the image is a combination of himself and his animal spirit, a halibut. Animals could also turn into people but they could not talk.

The tile is made from the Bootlegger Cove clay gathered from the mudflats near Anchorage.

Tiles are usually fired three times. The first is a bisque firing to cone 04, or about 1850 degrees Fahrenheit, and the other two firings are to cone 6, or about 2150 degrees Fahrenheit. The tile can be used in just about any setting, wet or dry, indoor or outdoor, even as a hot plate. Though most customers just hang the tile on the wall as art.

The “Silver Hand Artist” stamp on the backside means I’m registered with the state of Alaska as a native Alaskan artist.

All tiles are made to order, it is listed as “in-stock” so you can order and pay. Being a one-person business, it will take 2-3 weeks to make the item if it is not currently available. I can email an image of the tile once it is made for your approval before shipping.
